Kids to the Country
By Alisha Sullivan
You cannot grow flowers in dark places
Said the Country-side to the City
Said a common sense which had with time
Become thoroughly uncommon to all our senses
Please begged the Countryside of the City
Please, bring your children to me
We tell time by taxes and so the season came
And we set about planting our children
Between buildings
Where the sun did not show
And on the concrete.
When they did not grow
We sought the advice of scientist,
Psychologist and sociologist alike
The magicians of our day
Who magically discovered
Children should not play in the street
Please begged the Country-side of the City
Please, bring your children to me
In my arms they can laugh, and run and play
Learn science, psychology and sociology
From the book in which they were very first written
From the source that inspired it, learn of art
From the place where it was first made, learn history
The children are our shared future
They bloom the flowers of our legacy
In the clean air, fresh water and calm
They grow bright, strong and healthy
And in the City we listened
And brought the kids to the Country
