The Spring 2000 Bulletin
Vol. 16, No. 1
COMPUTERS TO DOMINICA, 2000
by Chuck Haren

A little collaboration goes a long way! This spring, Plenty is involved in a collaborative effort with Florida State University and FAVA/CA (Florida Association of Voluntary Agencies for Caribbean Action) to set up a working computer lab for basic computer training on the Carib Reserve. Plenty board member Karen Flaherty is helping set up a visit for 12 Florida State University students who will work with the Carib people in March. They will be bringing 6 good computer systems and printers with them, and part of the student group will set up this equipment and provide instruction in its use and maintenance.

The other FSU students will be working with representatives of the Carib Tour Guides Association (KARTOGA) in creating an eco-trail to a famous Carib natural wonder, L'Escalie tete chien in Senecou. Along with logistical support, Plenty is providing $700 to help with their transportation expenses. Karen is also helping the Organization of Concerned Carib Women (OCC\V) to access technical support for family-related education activities, as they requested (see Plenty's 1999 Winter bulletin for more info).

Four MBA volunteers from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania have also expressed an interest in working with the Caribs in August. Plenty will help facilitate their work. Plenty has a long- standing relationship with Wharton School, dating to 1987. Many MBA volunteers have spent part of their summers working on Plenty projects, including working at Pine Ridge reservation, the Carib Territory in Dominica, and Belize.

WAIKADA (the Carib Development Association) and Carib Council representatives have also requested a volunteer to work for a minimum of 3 months to help these groups establish office systems and develop office skills. They are also asking for assistance in building an addition to the WAIKADA office for a community radio station. We're putting out the word to help them develop these resources. If you're interested in volunteering on one of these projects, contact Plenty for more information.
